ATI Radeon™ HD 2000 Family Video Demos
Ruby’s latest adventure takes place in a rugged, mountainous terrain where her skills as a snowboarder are tested and may just save her life. This fast paced, action packed demo exploits the power of the ATI Radeon HD 2900XT to create a rich and expansive landscape of snow, rock, and ice. From the procedural snow accumulation on the harsh terrain to the wrinkles on Ruby’s brow and the physics that drive each strand of fur on Ruby’s fur collar, the ATI Radeon HD 2900XT can handle it all. In order to create an expressive, compelling character our artists constructed 128 morph targets to drive Ruby’s facial rig. All of these facial “poses” are combined using the GPU to create Ruby’s final look. Ruby also uses a number of animated wrinkle maps to add additional subtle expressiveness to her brow, eyes, mouth and chin. High dynamic range imaging techniques are used through out the Whiteout demo to account for the brightest of outdoor environments as well as the darkest depths of Ruby’s icy head quarters. Advanced light scattering techniques are employed to faithfully reproduce the complex interactions of light with snow and ice. * Whiteout demo requires Windows Vista®, an ATI Radeon™ HD series product with 512MB of video memory and a high end CPU with 1GB of RAM
The tessellation support contained in all the ATI Radeon HD 2000 series allows for the generation of highly detailed geometry from simple base meshes and displacement maps. This feature enables game developers to significantly raise the visual quality and complexity of their titles while lowering the cost of development. Tessellation offers a number of benefits in addition to increased geometric complexity – including more animation data, higher quality animation and stable, predictable performance. Tessellation is also an effective method of compression for both vertex and animation data giving both memory and storage savings. The detailed geometry of the mountain range is generated on the fly using displacement mapping from a coarse base mesh. With tessellation and ATI Radeon HD 2000 series displacement mapped surfaces finally become first class citizens. In addition, the snow cover is generated procedurally, based on the slope of the generated geometry.
Valve is pleased to announce that the next generation of facial animation technology for Source will be released in Team Fortress 2. By leveraging the rapid pace of advancement in PC graphics, videogames can now match and actually surpass the facial animation used in feature film and broadcast television production. We’ve released a video of this real-time, in-game, in-engine facial animation in action in support of AMD’s launch of the ATI Radeon HD 2000 series. By running entirely on the GPU of the videocard, the facial animation not only looks dramatically better, but frees up the CPU to perform other tasks like physics or AI. This technology is available to all Source engine licenses as well as MODs based on those games. For more information, please visit Steamgames.com
