AMD and XBOX® have worked together for more than two decades, from the silicon in XBOX consoles and handhelds to technologies like DirectX®. Working closely with the XBOX team, we have brought AMD FSR™ Upscaling 4.1.2 to XBOX Series X|S with the October 2026 Microsoft Game Development Kit (GDK). This brings ML-based AMD FSR Upscaling to XBOX consoles for the first time. Developers who already use analytical AMD FidelityFX™ Super Resolution on XBOX now have an upgraded option for higher perceived resolution and image quality.

A new AMD FSR GDK sample shows how to integrate it, and Microsoft covers the release in the GDK What’s new. With the same AMD FSR SDK, developers can also bring it to ROG XBOX Ally handhelds.

AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 now available for XBOX developers

What’s in the AMD FSR GDK sample

On XBOX Series X|S, AMD FSR™ Upscaling 4.1.2 includes two models: the Full INT8 model, and a new efficient Lite INT8 model that is less than half the size and has a lower upscaling cost. Both models run on XBOX Series X and XBOX Series S. Developers choose the one that gives each title the balance of GPU performance and visual quality it needs. XBOX has optimized the implementation for both consoles, in collaboration with AMD.

The AMD FSR GDK sample switches between the Full and Lite models at runtime, so developers can compare image quality and upscaling cost in the same scene. Upscaler memory is the same for both models because it depends on render and display resolution, not on the model. That makes the choice a performance trade-off, not a memory one. The sample builds for both XBOX Series X|S and Windows desktop, and its README includes memory and performance figures for both models on each console.

Integrating with the AMD FSR SDK

AMD FSR Upscaling on XBOX uses the same AMD FSR™ SDK API as on Windows: registered XBOX developers get the AMD-signed binaries for XBOX Series X|S in the GDK, and integrate them with the same API headers as on PC. The upscaler takes the same inputs developers already provide for FSR on PC: jittered color, depth and motion vectors. The reactive mask and the transparency and composition mask are optional.

The quality modes also match PC: Native AA, Quality, Balanced, Performance and Ultra Performance. As on PC, we recommend using these standard names and scaling ratios in your game’s settings so players get a consistent experience across titles; see our AMD FSR naming guidelines. For the API reference and integration guidance, see the AMD FSR SDK documentation on GPUOpen.

AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 on ROG XBOX Ally handhelds

The ROG XBOX Ally, ROG XBOX Ally X and ROG XBOX Ally X20 are Windows devices, so developers integrate AMD FSR™ Upscaling 4.1.2 on them using the standard AMD FSR SDK. With AMD FSR SDK 2.4, FSR Upscaling supports the AMD Ryzen™ AI Z2 Extreme and AMD Ryzen™ Z2 A processors that power these handhelds, using a highly efficient INT8 model.

AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1 supported on ROG XBOX Ally X20 and ROG XBOX Ally X

To see AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 on these handhelds today, developers can install ASUS’s preview driver for the ROG XBOX Ally X and ROG XBOX Ally X20. It upgrades DirectX® 12 games with FSR 3.1 or newer, and ROG XBOX Ally support follows in a later update. We always recommend natively integrating the latest AMD FSR SDK, which is also required for FSR Upscaling 4.1.2 on Vulkan®.

Together with XBOX Series X|S, this means a common FSR SDK integration now scales across the AMD ecosystem, from handhelds and laptops to game consoles and desktop PCs.

Get started with AMD FSR Upscaling 4.1.2

AMD FSR™ Upscaling 4.1.2 is available on XBOX Series X|S with the October 2026 GDK, and on ROG XBOX Ally handhelds with AMD FSR SDK 2.4. Bring ML-based upscaling to more of your players, on more of the devices they play on.
